Marine Bioscience as the Pioneer of the Next Age
Taking as its foundation the cutting-edge technology of life sciences as well as the thinking processes found in resource management and bio-production, the School of Marine Biosciences has gained a worldwide reputation for research and education in the field of living marine resources. In 2011, due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, the School moved the base of its operations from the Sanriku coast to Sagamihara, where it has fully incorporated practical training via the newly built education and research wing as well as the Sanriku Seaside Practice Facilities and similar facilities of outside organizations. As a result, the School is offering a richer quality of education and research than ever before.

Message from the Dean

Pioneering the Future with the Sea
The former School of Fisheries Sciences, now the School of Marine Biosciences, was established in Sanriku-cho, Kesen-gun, Iwate Prefecture, in April 1972, with the aim of developing fisheries science with a focus on cultivated fisheries. In 2008, the School was renamed the School of Marine Biosciences, and the 50th anniversary of the founding was celebrated in 2022. For a while after its establishment, the university conducted education and research at the Sanriku campus, taking advantage of its geographical location, and produced many talented graduates. However, the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred in March 2011 devastated the area surrounding the Sanriku Campus. As a result, the center of education and research was moved to the Sagamihara Campus, where it remains today. The Sanriku Campus was relaunched as the Sanriku Education and Research Center for Marine Biosciences in April 2014, and is used for Field Studies.

Dean of Kitasato University School of Marine Biosciences
The Philosophy of the Kitasato Institute and Kitasato University is “With profound respect for the sanctity of life, our purpose is to contribute to society by dedicating ourselves to the quest for truth through the application of practical science.” The School of Marine Biosciences conducts basic research on the life phenomena of marine organisms from a life science perspective , which is advancing remarkably, and aims to apply the results to the permanent and effective utilization of marine biological resources.

In the first year, students study general education courses that form the basis for four years of study together with students from other faculties; in the second year, students study basic subjects for learning marine biosciences, and in the third year, students begin to study specialized subjects in earnest. In the fourth year, students are assigned to a laboratory of their choice and work one-on-one with a faculty member on their graduation thesis, which is the culmination of their university studies. Through this systematic education from basic to specialized fields, our goal is to nurture students with a multifaceted view of society and people, a keen international sense, problem-solving and communication skills, and the ability to play an active role in a wide range of fields related to the utilization of marine biological resources.
