Sanriku Campus Sanriku Education and Research Center for Marine Biosciences

Blessed with a rich mixture of the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents, the Sanriku Sea has long been known as one of the world's leading fishing grounds. Along its coastline, Sanriku Education and Research Center for Marine Biosciences is situated on the highlands of the Okirai Peninsula in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture. Yoshihama Bay, famous for its abalone, stretches out below. Due to its coastal location, the area surprisingly receives little snowfall and the climate is relatively mild. The area is surrounded by mountains, rivers and forests, with deer and squirrels frequently seen around the campus, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
