１．猫伝染性腹膜炎(猫コロナウイルス感染症)に関する研究 致死性コロナウイルス感染症である猫伝染性腹膜炎の治療薬およびワクチンの開発を行っています。また、早期的な治療を目指して、迅速かつ正確な猫伝染性腹膜炎の診断法の開発も試みています。さらに、ワクチン開発において最大の障害となっている抗体依存性感染増強（ADE）の発生メカニズムの解明にも取り組んでいます。 ２．猫と犬のウイルス性胃腸炎に関する研究 胃腸炎は猫や犬にとって一般的な病気です。しかし、その原因が不明であることは少なくありません。私たちは猫や犬における原因不明の胃腸炎に新規のウイルスが関与するのではないかと考えております。実際に、ネコノロウイルス、イヌアストロウイルスなどが胃腸炎に関わる可能性を卒業論文研究で明らかにしております(学術雑誌に発表済み)。現在は、ネコノロウイルスを中心に、猫や犬のウイルス性胃腸炎の疫学調査、原因ウイルスが胃腸炎を起こすメカニズム、ウイルス性胃腸炎の予防法などを研究しています。
獣医伝染病学研究室では、およそ30年前から猫のウイルス感染症の研究を続けており、これまでに多くの有用な結果が得られています。例えば、現在市販されている猫免疫不全ウイルス感染症のワクチンは当研究室での研究成果が大きく関与しています。現在は、30年間に培われた知識および技術を駆使して猫のウイルス感染症、特に猫伝染性腹膜炎の治療薬およびワクチンの開発に取り組んでいます。
