    Scientific clarification of the mechanisms of preventive/therapeutic effects of Japanese herbal (Kampo) medicines and plant-derived materials on infectious diseases and immunological and neurological disorders and their industrial application.

  1. Comprehensive analysis of Kampo medicines regarding their pharmacological activities, action mechanisms, and active ingredients.
    1. Analysis of the pharmacological activities ofKampomedicines against immunocompromisation and chronic inflammatory diseases from the viewpoint of regulating the mucosal immune system.
    2. Comprehensive analysis of the preventive and therapeutic effects of Kampo medicines on infectious diseases such as influenza.
    3. Comprehensive analysis of the preventive and therapeutic effects of Kampo medicines on emotional disorders including depression.

  2. Scientific clarification of the structures and immunopharmacological activities of macromolecular polysaccharides in herbal medicines and edible plants.

  3. Development of drugs for the regulation of responses to infections and mucosal immune responses and useful seeds based on information concerning the active ingredients of plant-derived materials.
