『臨床医に必要な法医学の学習』を基本方針として、まず死についての医学的?社会学的?法律的な問題提起から始まり、死因あるいは死亡時刻を究明するために必要な知識を習得させ、さらに豊富な法医解剖例による事例講義と併せて、学内における異状死体の検案や法医解剖の見学または参加を積極的に行うことで、臨床医を志すものにとって必要とされる『法医学的考え方』を身につけられるよう教育している。医学部第3学年で「医学研究入門3」の実習、第4学年で法医学系の講義、第6学年で「クリニカルクラークシップ」の選択科目実習を受け入れている。
内因性突然死や乳幼児突然死症候群（SIDS）、死体現象の再考や各種薬毒物の分析法の確立?標準化、心臓性突然死の遺伝学的検索や身元特定のためのDNA鑑定、薬毒物中毒解析など様々な分野で研究を行っている。
新医学部棟建設時にご遺体専用のCTを導入することが予定されている。
